So this weekend, I went with Jake Miller and his father Bruce to the Power 96 radio station to sit down with the VP of Programming and try and get the song "Dreamin" on the radio. So we went up to the station and we sat down in a conference room with the head of Power 96 and just talked normally, not even about the song but what Jake Miller was all about. He made himself sound good and it seemed as though he impressed the guy. Then two seconds later, the VP of Programming came in and we talked about how songs actually get on the radio. It was surprising to me that approximately 20 songs get played over the radio.
He went on to talk about the categories that Power 96 has. Their is the "Power" category where only 5 TOP NOTCH songs are played. Those are usually the new Lil Wayne, Drake, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj type songs that everyone soon knows and loves. Then there is the step below, and the step below, and the step below. Jake Miller's song would be played in most likely the last step, roughly only once a day. But we are just looking for exposure so that is O.K. Then after he was done a common DJ, Big Raj, came into the meeting to actually talk about Jake's song. He said it is a great song but, "Is it a hit?" "Is it radio-friendly?" "Is it what people are looking for?" Those are al questions that need to be asked. He said the rapper Pitbull came into the same meeting day-after-day with nearly 79 hits that only one was played. So radio songs need to be chosen wisely.
After the meeting we went on a tour and went into the Power 96 DJ Booth with DJ Lucy Lopez, and she tore Jake a new one. The minute we walked in, she told Jake to rap on the spot. He froze, but then regained composure and rapped his song. She was mildly impressed and took a picture with him and told us to get the "F***" out of her booth (kidding of course). On the way home, she commented on Jakes Facebook and we asked her to give him a shoutout. Seconds later she talked about him and we went crazy. Hopefully Jake will be on the radio soon enough,
